Coenzyme Q10 ( CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance
also known as Ubiquinone. It functions as an antioxidant to prevent
free-radical damage at the cellular level and is vital for cellular energy
production.
If you know about CoQ10, your are among the
well-informed minority. Most North American have not heard of CoQ10 largely
because of the slow acceptance of nutrition benefits by the traditional
western medical establishment. A big step towards wider acceptance of CoQ10
in the U.S. came with the 1987 publication of "The Miracle Nutrient: CoQ10"
by Emile G. Bliznakov, M.D., and Gerald L. Hunt.
Many significant studies about CoQ10 actually
could trace back to the late 1960’s. It has been
shown in studies to be effective for
treating aging, allergies, asthma, candidiasis, cardiovascular disease,
deafness, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, impaired immunity ,
multiple sclerosis, obesity, gum disease, respiratory disease and
other ailments related to aging.
CoQ10 is found naturally in many foods ( sardine,
mackerel, spinach, broccoli). But after the age of 35, we begin to slow down
our natural ability to synthesize CoQ10 from foods and develop a deficiency
gradually. Also, poor eating habits, stress and infection all affect our own
ability to provide adequate amounts of CoQ10 for the body.
Many studies have shown that people suffering
from different forms of heart disease are deficient in CoQ10 ;
and improve with CoQ10 supplements. Also, several
studies suggest that
people with chronic gum disease tend to have low CoQ10 levels and improve
with CoQ10 supplements as well.

Good results have happened repeatedly like this:
some people have taken CoQ10 supplements for their weak hearts ; later they
found that their gum diseases have healed for unknown reason. The educated
guess is --- the heart tissue and the gum tissue are similar and CoQ10 have
made good improvement for both.

It is a wise decision to begin taking some
CoQ10 supplements after age 40 for its multiple health benefits. And should
one have gum disease or heart disease, this nutrient can help.
Its safety record is excellent. (Omni magazine
printed an article reporting that over 12 million people in Japan take CoQ10
supplements daily.) Well, the only precaution is --- there is no studies on
the effect of CoQ10 during pregnancy.
Although there is no studies on the effect of CoQ10 during
pregnancy, one study showed that pregnant women who have periodontal disease
are seven times more likely to have a premature, underweight baby. It
appears that periodontal disease triggers increased levels of the biological
fluids that induce labor. Logically it seems to be a good idea to take care
of periodental disease first before having baby. The precaution might very
well save parents from a family pitfall. Smart nutrition & maintenance for
healthy gums is important for making healthy babies.
